EFFECTS OF INCREASING THE INERTIA ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ELECTROHYDRAULIC POSITIONAL SERVOMECHANISM

Filmed in the motion control lab at IDAS Engineering Inc, this video demonstration helps you to understand the detrimental effects of incorrect gain adjustment and excessive load inertia on system performance.  It will teach you about the all of the data collection instruments and the physical  structure of the system.  Watch for yourself how the machine is put through a cyclic motion and see the effects, immediately, as the gain is varied.  But more importantly, watch how increasing the load inertia causes a progressive deterioration in servo system performance.  You can see directly, how the fluid compressibility (hydraulic capacitance), fixture deflection and load inertia interact to reduce the hydromechanical resonant frequency.  Also, you will be able to observe  how the system goes from being valve-limited to being resonant-frequency limited, and you can  learn how lowering the resonant frequency through large inertia loading makes the machine much more difficult to control. FOUR METHODS OF DEALING WITH THE DIFFICULT MACHINE

The performance of an electrohydraulic motion control system servomechanism is seriously degraded when the hydromechanical resonant frequency is too low.  Designers strive to keep the resonant frequency as high as possible.  At times, however, the cost of doing so is excessive.

In this video you will see what system designers can do when they are forced to work with low-resonant frequency systems, and yet must have responsiveness and smoothness. This new video shows you four different methods that can be implemented in the electro-hydraulic motion control system to achieve a smoother, more reliable machine.  All methods are explained and demonstrated in the motion control laboratory at IDAS Engineering Inc.  You will get a firsthand look at these four methods and you can see how effective they are when applied to off-the-shelf motion controllers or “home grown” electro-hydraulic systems.   You will also better understand why some applications can be designed and implemented with relative ease, and why others can be seemingly uncontrollable.  Most importantly, you will be able to compare the methods, and in that way, make informed evaluations of what you might do on your own, real, industrial motion control system to

ARE SERVO SYSTEM RESERVOIRS TOO BIG?   A Free CD Video

 

This 20 minute CD video was shot in the IDAS Engineering lab using a 25 horsepower, engine-driven power unit.  The aim is to demonstrate, very forcefully and very graphically, that a diffuser can help to reduce the size of a hydraulic reservoir.  You will see the dramatic reduction in reservoir turbulence with the diffuser in place, but the most dramatic part is the size of the reservoir relative to the peak and steady-state return line flows.  You will also see how the very simple diffuser was constructed and installed.    This video is useful to anyone who is interested in a necessary move toward down-sizing hydraulic reservoirs.
